“Amarula can be enjoyed on its own, over crushed ice, on the rocks or with sparkling mineral water as a tall drink,” said Julie Lee, Amarula Brand Manager. “It can also be used as an ingredient in cocktails, in coffee, over ice cream and in desserts.”
Amarula is made from the fruit of the Marula tree, indigenous to the southern latitudes of subequatorial Africa. Never cultivated by man, the tree bears a small yellow fruit in great profusion and is very popular with local wildlife. The Marula tree, received its nickname because the massive beasts gorge themselves on marula fruit when it ripens in early February.
The liqueur made from the Marula tree is blended with the finest, freshest cream to a smooth consistency. Rich and soft with an alcohol content of 17%, Amarula is caramel in flavor, with an exotic hint of tropical, guava fruit on the back palate.
Because of the marula tree's association with elephants, the distiller has made them its symbol and supports elephant conservation efforts, co-funding the Amarula Elephant Research Programme at the University of Natal, Durban
